Bad head gasket question?

I was looking at a 1994 pontiac grand am gt. It has the 3.1 v6 in it. The guy said he thinks it has a bad head gasket, because theres water in the oil. I was wondering if there is anything else it might be besides that? Also what would have caused the head gasket to blow, and would there likely be any problems after changing the head gasket? He started it up and it actually sounded pretty good with the blown head gasket, or w/e the problem is. Please give me and scenarious and info about this problem. ThanksBad head gasket question?I would simply stay away from this vehicle. I suspect a lower intake gasket failure which is common for this engine. However, if the vehicle has been run like this for some time, the lower end of the motor (Lower Bearings) may be damaged. Also, if the vehicle has been severely overheated it will probably need new heads as well (Very Expensive)

Find a different vehicle, nothing good can come of this for you. ASE Certified 25 years
Bad head gasket question?
most likely intake gaskets on this engine not normally a head gasket problem
Bad head gasket question?
these 3.1 are famous for this also the intake gaskets are a problem with these 3.1 check for that 2 good luck
I would have to say the problem is more likely the intake gasket. One problem with getting water or antifreeze in the oil is it removes the clevite from the bearings and causes the engine to spin a bearing. Basically blows up. One thing GM did to aid in this problem is they started putting Dex Cool antifreeze in their vehicles. Dex Cool does not damage the bearings. If this car has green antifreeze in it stay away from it. If its orange antifreeze chances are the bearings are safe. It will still be a rather expensive repair, to fix this correctly so it doesn't happen again you need to get the intake and the heads milled to straighten the surfaces so the gaskets seal perfectly. Good Luck!
it could have got too hot once and warped the head or possibly the head is cracked.
