    changing the head gasket will not stop that problem, however the rings and/or the valve stem seals could be at fault. every engine out there burns oil. it is part of life and nothing that can be done about it. if you are not happy wit the rate of consumption there is a few things that you can do. first off go to a little heavier oil, that is all it takes some times. also there is now an oil for this situation, the higher mileage oil can help to return the seals to there original shape and help them become more flexible again. it is not a cure all though. most manufactures agree that roughly a quart every 3000 mile is normal. if you ask me if it does not happen, at that point i would worry.My wife car is burning oil what can she do to stop it change the head gasket?you did not mention the make or year of car. or how many miles on it. so we would assume that the car is old. you need another car or it is time for an overhaul.

    do this first ! take the valve pans off and see if the drain holes are opened up. if they are clogged then oil can run down pass the valve seals and get on the valves. i fix a car awhile back and that what was wrong with it.

    There are too many answers for this question. How many quarts of oil is your wife's car using per 1000 miles of driving? Believe it or not, 1 quart per 1000 miles is considered normal although for late model cars this is rare. If sludge is built up in the valve cover(s) over the top of the cylinder head and on some engines this can be checked by removing the oil filer cap and looking into to the filler pipe area. If you see oil (like water not draining in the bath tub), then the cylinder head drain holes are blocked and need to be opened. The PCV system can also be blocked sucking oil under extra pressure.

    Better to get a good mechanic on that one i'm afraid. It's not an easy engine to work on.
    It's a fairly straightforward job BUT buy a manual first. For the sake of less than 拢20 it could save you a lot of trouble! I presume your changing the cambelt as well. Might be worth replacing the water pump and thermostat at the same time. It's a lot easier when the head is removed and might save trouble later on. The head might need skimming if the engine has been overheated, well worth checking. First remove the cambelt cover and line up the timing marks. The crankshaft pulley bolt is very tight and you will need to lock the engine to undo it. If you select top gear then get someone to press the brake pedal hard it might stop the engine turning when you undo the bolt, otherwise you may need to remove the starter motor and lock the flywheel. Whatever you do, DO NOT turn the engine over when the head is removed as the headbolts screw into the main bearing caps and there is a good chance they will fall into the sump if the engine is turned! These are just a few tips to help as it would take too long to explain the whole procedure in detail, so buy a manual.

    When you refill the cooling system make sure you bleed all the air out of the system afterwards. Turn the heater control to hot. The bleed screw is at the righthand side of the head below the distributor on the top coolant pipe. Undo this till now more air comes out. Run the engine until it warms up, then turn the engine off and let it cool down. You will probably find you need to top the coolant up again and maybe even bleed it again. It can be a bit of a bugger to get all the air out of the system, but make sure you do otherwise it will overheat very quickly. Hope this helps and I havn't put you off, but it really is no more difficult than any other engine. Good luck.

If you are good at working on cars and have the tools and manual for the vehicle you can do it at home and fix it yourself but you can't be cheap and try to skip steps or it will come back to haunt you in the end. You will have to change all or the gaskets above the heads and the head bolts as well as all of the fluids. It might be a good idea to change the water pump and thermostat while you have it apart to make sure they are good when you get it all back together. Hope I have been helpful.

    Replacing a head gasket is not a DIY job, unless the person has plenty of experience, knowledge, and the proper tools. The fact that a you would even ask, %26quot;how and how hard is it to change the head gasket%26quot;, would indicate to some that you should not try to do that repair.



    To replace a head gasket you must remove the intake manifold, exhaust manifold, valve train, and then the head. This is very involved and requires disconnecting lots of sensors and the ignition system. The head must then be checked to see if it is warped, or cracked, and repaired if necessary. You must then know how to put all this back together and torque all the bolts in the proper sequence. This takes training and skill which the average shade tree mechanic does not have.



    If you are dead set on DIYing it, get a vehicle specific repair manual and dig in. Good luck

    that is my opinion also. If you have to ask it is beyond your current abilities. It would also be of use to know which engine if there is more than one available in this vehicle and if it is the front or rear head. In general the front head is a hard job, the rear head is near impossible. If it is a 3100 or in that series I would replace the car. If it is a 3800 series I would think it is a cracked lower intake manifold, about a $900 job.
    Not to hard. Get a manual to be a general guide. The first check is the intake gaskets, they go out and dump coolant in the oil. This makes people think the head gasket is out. Intake has to come off to do the heads, so it's not wasted labor. Take your time, take notes, label everything, METICULOUSLY clean everything and every surface, and put it back together with new head bolts. It's not that hard if it was I wouldn't be doing them. 3.1/3.4 The cylinder right under the alternator has the blown gasket. Has been every time I've done one. 3.8 probably the plastic intake is burned through around the EGR tube.

I cannot figure out why the car is running bad. I can get it started and when I test drove it, as I took a turn the car died. It seemed like every couple blocks I would drive it would die.     Your really saying anything here. What make, model, engine size, country of origin, mileage????? NEED MORE INFO!!! Use Gum-out to find vacuum leaks. Use Gum-out to clean your throttle body, plate, and IDLE Control system. Use it to clean the EGR valve, inside. Good luck!!

    It sounds like a fuel line was not re-connected properly. This vehicle has a high pressure fuel pump. AND it can spray atomized fuel all over the engine compartment. Park it, call the guys that did the work and have them come and look at it. If they refuse, have it towed to them and after they fix it, give them the tow bill. If it catches fire, it will most likely be a total loss.

    My thought is to let a garage do it, you will need special tool (you can make a couple yourself) to do things like hold the pistons steady, plus the cylinder head might need to be looked at in case it has warped (standard to do for the Rover engines), you will need a torque wrench.



    While you are at it change the timing belt, and cooling water pump, new gaskets (cylinder head and rocker covers), bolts, oil and filter and top up coolant.



    All the waste fluids (oil and coolant) need to be disposed of properly





    Anyway, I would ask a garage to do it, a bit costly 拢350 but a lot easier

    i would check the electrical connections, they could be loose, also check fuses are tight

    when was the last tiem you had your brakes checked, you can get kwik fit to check them,

    if your brake drum is worn out, it owuld flash, the oil could just be the head gasket settling down.

    but really takeit back to the garage where oyu had the work and get them to fix it for free

    if the gaskets bad meaning like ripped or crimpled that can cause an oil leak from the head unit. you definitley want to get that fixed asap because if the oil leak theres not gonna be any lube for the engine and that will cause you more problems....... I wouldnt drive that for very long distances or if you have to maybe a couple min if your lucky.
    Is your idle low? I麓d say alternator or if applicable: relay to this. What kind of a car is it?
    Could be that while working on the engine the electrical connections were disconnected and not put back properly - if they all flicker at the same time!

    If they flicker seperately you most likely have an enine oil pressure problem and either low brake fluid or a brake pad wear indicatior telling you a pad is nearly worn out.

    You'd better plan on an engine shop lined up to check the flatness of the head and re-machining flat if they're not. Throwing a head gasket on a motor doesn't solve the real problem.     Do you have a torque wrench?
    out of ten, probably a ten. Its not the easiest repair for someone who doesn't know what there doing. There are a lot of possible mistakes to be made during this repair.

    it would be hard if you have never taken apart an engine. you have to take the whole top half of the engine off and thats the easy part. putting it back together is the hard part and and if you dont put it back together right you can break valves and can cost you alot of money. best bet is to go with a mechanic
    I've answered a few of these questions %26amp; gone so far as suggesting one put a $5$ tube of aluma seal in the rad as opposed to paying someone upwards of a thousand bucks to do the job.



    This is generic advice, not specific to your make %26amp; model.

    First you are going to need metric sockets %26amp; wrenches. You will start by tearing everything on top of the engine off so you can gain access to the job. Is this fuel injected or throttle body? Fuel injected will have a whole lot more to remove.

    Second, with the top of the engine cleaned off, remove the intake manifold. This is not rocket science, bust pull the bolts that hold it to the head.

    Third, remove the bolts that connect the exhaust manifold to the head. On some models they are hard to gain access to, %26amp; they are almost always tighter than a ***** because of the high heat they are continually exposed to.

    (This is all sounding easier than it is.)

    Pull your valve covers.

    Now you are down to the bolts that go through the head %26amp; hold it to the block. These are big bolts, %26amp; usually have a pretty healthy torque to them. If this is an aluminum block, they won't be torqued as tight as if it was a cast iron block. Still, you are going to want a serious breaker bar at your disposal %26amp; good (not cheap chinese) 6 point sockets.

    After that, the head(s) should pop off.

    With a scraper, CAREFULLY remove gasket residue from mating surfaces of block %26amp; head.

    You should have already had a book -- a Chiltons or Haynes with instructions %26amp; illustrations is fine.

    Install gaskets, %26amp; then begin reinstallation in reverse of teardown.

    The bolts that hold the head to the block need to be torqued in a specific order. Your book will illustrate the order. Your book will also give you the torque value. Don't settle for %26quot;pretty tight%26quot; with the breaker bar you removed them with. Use a torque wrench. Beg, buy, borrow or steal.

    If it is just seepuing a bit into the combustion chamber, I don't care what anyone says, I'd soon as take a chance with a tube of alumasea in the rad as opposed to putting myself through this job or dropping 1000$ plus to have it done downtown.

    Fairly difficult, but if you concentrate and follow the manual carefully you should be fine. Make sure you have a tension wrench to tension the head bolts, and feeler gauges and straight edge to check any warp or hollows in the head as specified in the repair manual. It is a fairly big job though.

    If you have a a leaking head gasket that isn't too bad, you could try a chemical sealer to keep you going.

    I've used this metallic seal-up head gasket sealer quite a few times with good results that last for years. You'll find it at your auto parts store. Also follow the instructions closely.

    It's a heap less work and cost than a head gasket change. I'm well versed in changing head gaskets and I use this seal up in preference.

    I believe the 1989 Chrysler Lebaron was only offered with a 4cyl, 2.2L / 2.5L TBI, and MPI turbo, the 3.0L V-6 was only offered in the Van (Caravan %26amp; Voyager) and New Yorker models.

    there are far to many steps to list here in this type of forum. but I can tell you to make sure to label all connectors, vaccum lines, bag and store all bolts for each part and if needed take pictures of everything in the event that you forget how it all goes back together. a repair book is also nice to have. the books can be picked up for around 20 to 25 bucks..

    About the head gasket?

    Based on the answers I got, i have checked and found that there are no leaks, the oil looks congealed. How much would it cost to get a head gasket changed? I am now certain that water is leaking into the engine.About the head gasket?It depends on the car and on the mechanic. The gasket itself is not that expensive, probably around $30-$60. But it may take a while to get to it, and there are other gaskets that may need to be replaced (like the valve cover gasket). However, if you are ok with wrenches, nuts, and bolts, you could do it yourself. Most cars don't require that you remove the engine, and it shouldn't take more than 3 hours even if you're inexperienced. If you consider doing it yourself, I would recommend getting a repair book for your car and studying all the diagrams. Also, buy all the gaskets you may need to replace--I wouldn't recommend using liquid gasket--and get the best gasket dressings/sealants you can find.



    Now, the really important part for do-it-yourself is to get a torque wrench and make sure that you tighten everything properly. The repair book diagrams usually indicate proper torque settings for every nut and bolt--make sure to follow these. Mechanics, especially cheaper ones, tend to use regular hand/power tools instead of proper torque wrenches and they overtighten most everything from wheels to spark plugs to engine parts. That may not be problematic right away, but it will be down the road in several years. When it comes to engines, overtightening damages gaskets (especially those made from liquid gasket or those that were put on without proper gasket dressing by incompetent mechanics) that results in oil leaks in a couple years.

    Probably 拢200-400 depending on the make/model etc. It's expensive as the head is usually skimmed to ensure a perfect fit on the replacement gasket.



    Or if you want the cheap and cheerfull you could risk without the skim, but always a chance you might do some major damage to your car, and most garages will not recommend it.

    My MkIV Zephyr had that problem too. It's way cheaper to buy a whole new car. Trust me, I found out the hard way. Even if your car is really new, like so new that it's only 'just' come off warranty (usually the exact time the head gasket blows) - it is still cheaper just to go buy another car.

    Dale, It's important to have the cylinder head checked for flatness while it's off the car. If it's out of flat it should be machined at an automotive machine shop.

    If a warped cylinder head with a new head gasket is placed on the block and bolted on the same thing is going to happen again sooner or later.

    As you can see the price will vary. Typically a machine shop will charge between $100.00- $150.00. for truing up a cylinder head.

    lookin down in the rad.
    A head gasket problem will more then likely cause the engine to miss. or a possible white smoke from the exhaust pipe. more info would be needed, like if the cooling fan is coming on, radiator is in good shape, radiator cap is functioning properly, etc. A thermostat that failed could be the cause of overheating if you are not experiencing other things also.

    Yes, like they said above, basically check the OIL dipstick and see if you see any condensation or white stuff in the oil. This is the water mixing with the oil.



    If it still overheats and no indication of oil, OR water leaks, then your radiator core is clugged up somehow. Or if you have fans they may not be working? Here is the section on troubleshooting from Auto Zone on your car. Also do you have 4 or 6 cylinder? Do the fans work? Anymore problemos get back to me. I will be on for another 3 hours.

    The valves are taping due to poor lubrication, also did you do a valve job before u put the gaskets on? Also Use STP oil treatment after replacing the gaskets its a thicker oil that lubes better.



    The water pump wont be ur only issue. it sound like there is some restriction in the cooling system, Firs check the upper radiator hose it should be hot not cold, check the reservoir its shouldn't be over flowing and make sure the V-belt is in good condition make sure there are no cracks in the belt. make sure The thermostat is installed correctly and Check the radiator it self if the radiator is back-up i recommend a new one if u cant affored it remove radiator and have i boiled out clean.



    Oh just for safe measure get a block test done just so u will know there are no cracks in the block

    You have multiple problems all at once! Also you didn't say whether it has hydraulic or mechanical valves, adjustable or non adjustable, -- some have discs that are changed out to make proper clearance (Volkswagen for example on rabbit engines)!



    So lets start with valve adjustments. Hydraulic lifters could be flat and not pumped up yet (depending on how long engine has run)! Or need adjusting etc!



    Next problem is overheating, -- did you remove the thermostat to see if water moves through the system? This could be cause of blown head gasket in first place?? It is not impossible that water pump could be bad, -- but it is not common, --- if it is turning, it would have to have vanes broken off, or split impeller spinning on shaft to not pump! And this does not happen often! There is no such word as impossible with machines! ................. Steam from oil cap could just be water evaporating out of oil, - and usually with blown head gasket, - water gets into oil pan too! ........ But this part should not have anything to do with noisy valves!



    Is this an engine with belt driven timing system, or chain driven one with overhead cam? Did you for sure get camshaft timing right, -- if a tooth or two off, it may run, but possibly pistons nicking valves? Also bad timing may make engine run hotter than it is supposed to!



    If this is a for or chev V-8, (and some V-6es) you can adjust rocker arm %26quot;lash%26quot; to get proper clearance. Get hold of a manual for procedure, -- you can look up in auto repair manual in library, - if nothing else!

    When you replaced the head gasket, did you properly adjust the valves, as in preload? Doesn't sound like it...as for different length push rods, you'll have to check that repair manual you went by...you did read the repair manual, right?



    As for the rest, head gaskets must go on only one way. Did you make sure all the holes lined up correctly, and one or more cooling passages weren't blocked by the gasket? Torqued properly, in sequence?



    Were the intake manifold and exhaust gaskets installed and torqued properly?



    Sorry to be a nag, but as you can see there is more to it than just unbolting and rebolting parts...

    Hi i have a 1994 vauxhall corsa swing. Its a 1.2 4 cylinder engine. I believe that my head gasket has either gone or is about to go. The symptons are:

    white smoke from exhaust but only on certain days

    when i removed the oil cap there was a white milky substance.

    I am gutted about this as it is my first car and havent actually drove it on my own yet.

    I have slight mechanical knowlege and as i am out of work i cannot afford to pay labour costs which i have heard are around 拢450. It will be the 8v engine as the 1.4 and 1.6 were the only 16v engines in the Corsa until the chain driven X12XE came out.



    You would need a head gasket set, 10 head bolts, thermostat, cambelt/tensioner, sealant for joint between rocker box and head, antifreeze, oil and filter. It's also advisable to have the head skimmed at the same time. Please don't try it if you're not sure because it is a big job and will be more expensive if it goes wrong.



    Have you tried a smaller garage, these will have a more reasonable labour rate?

    If it's the 16 valve fuel injection engine then I suggest that you don't try. There's a good reason why the labour costs are that high, basically because it's over complicated and will be a difficult job. That does sound like a head gasket or a cracked head problem. If it's been driven like that for a while the whole engine may be ruined, due to the poor condition of the oil - emulsified oil isn't a good lubricant. Whatever the case, it'll have to be dismantled before you will know more. It may be much easier to sell it and buy another car. Basically, if you have to ask this question then you don't have the experience to do the job without a lot of difficulty.



    Edit: It's difficult to be sure what you'll need to replace until you've stripped the engine. Your best bet may be to get your apprentice mechanic friend to help you, he may help you cheaply/as a favour and will benefit from the experience. Of course, however, he's also more likely to make a mistake. If you can get another engine (a good one) for under 拢250 (or even 拢100) then replace the engine, it's probably much easier that way (I'd do this if it was mine). Examine the clutch at the same time too while it's apart. You should have it done in a day with your friends help. Don't forget to send your log book back to the DVLA with your new engine number on it. If it's an OHV (overhead valve - push rods) engine then taking the head off is a very simple job but it's probably an OHC (overhead cam - timing belt/chain to top of engine) engine. The 16 valve one may even be a twin cam, not good for a beginner. Remember, it's a fifteen year old car so don't spend a fortune on it - don't spend anything unless you're sure of success, another good working engine will give you that certainty.
    If you are genuinely going to attempt the job yourself you need a Haynes Manual. It is absolutely essential that you follow procedure with a head gasket renewal. You will also need a torque wrench covering the stipulated ranges. The Manual will give you all the info you need, including setting up the timing gear and applying the correct torque to the head bolts. None of it is particularly difficult, but you need to be focussed and methodical. There are no shortcuts or tips, just read and do. If you are impatient or in a hurry you will balls it up.

    If the surfaces of the head are cracked or burned you need an exchange head. If there is damage to the engine block face, expense is inevitable as the engine will have to come out, or you bodge it and sell. Good luck.

    PS...DON'T put the new gasket on 'using a bit of sealant'. This adds a thin layer, making the new thickness TOO thick. And giving a weak layer to leak again later. Remember, the gasket has a metal construction to withstand HIGH cylinder pressure. A thin layer of sealant is a weak spot to %26quot;blow out%26quot; later.

    Put simply, once you've removed all the air cleaner, pipes, cables etc that are in the way, unbolt the rocker cover, then the cylinder head, scrape off the remains of the old gasket, put the new one on using a bit of sealant, refit the cylinder head, using new bolts done up to the correct torque, bolt everything back on, bob's your uncle!

    If you've never attempted anything like this before, take it to a garage, what I've described above would take a Peugeot mechanic with all the right tools 2 or 3 hours!
    i suggest unless you have any mechanical experience take it to a local garage and see if they could fit it for you

    It's a seriously messy job, plus new cam belt.



    My 1993 106 had the head gasket done last year, along with a lot of other work. If you can possibly get rid and start again then do. I part ex'd mine today as the head gasket was the first of a long list of things to go in very quick succession.

    Sorry, I looked at 45 pages of my %26quot;best answers%26quot; and could not find it.

    You need different steps for a carburetted engine, a fuel injected, but they are all similar for most steps.



    Basically, here are the steps..BASICALLY!

    1. Disconnect battery so the car will never start accidently.

    2. Drain coolant, save it if you are frugal.

    3. Disconnect 10 things that are in your way of removing the valve cover. air cleaner, spark plug wires/ coil pack, water hoses, distributor wires, fuel lines (carburettor can stay in place)

    3b. Disconnect the exhaust pipe at the manifold. This may require loosening the pipe below the engine too. LATER, remove the manifold when the head is out of the car (before planing the head).

    4. Now you have to remove the camshaft that is on top of the head....It is critcal that the engine's pistons do not move AT ALL. proceed to step 5 cautiously.

    5. remove the plasic covers over the timing belt.

    6. PUT A 10mm bolt in the hole on the cam gear and into the engine head. Put a 6mm bolt into the flywheel hole to block the flywheel from moving. see photo of similar hole on a 205 engine:

    bolt should go in one full inch!

    7. Now your engine will not accidentally change positions.

    Loosen the timing belt tensioner retaining nut. Pivot the belt tensioner with a square bar tool, to loosen the belt, then tighten the retaining nut.

    8. Remove the timing belt and store it safely and cleanly somewhere.

    9. Slacken and remove the oil dipstick tube.

    10. Slacken the 10 bolts progressively by 1/2 turn at a time. THIS MUST BE DONE in a circular sequence, here's wher the book is handy..imagine the 10 bolts are numbered like this:

    10....6......2....3....7...back row of bolts.

    9.......5.....1....4....8...front row of bolts.

    Slacken the bolts in this order, 10, 9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1.

    Remove the ten bolts and number them with tape and ink pen. Replace them in the exact same position later.

    10. Lift off the camshaft. Note the two positioning pins. You can now remove the 10mm bolt, but need it for reinstallation.

    11. gently rock the head forward and backward, gently!! untiul it comes loose from the block. DO NOT disturb the cylinder liners by affecting their heights, or you will create other serious problems. see photo of cylinder liners (Pug 205) these liners must be checked for proper height BEFORE installing the Head again.

    12. Lift off the head. Take it to a machine shop for planing, cleaning, spring inspection, vavle guide replacement. You cannot replace a broken spring later on.

    13. Remove head gasket. Traditionally it is broken in the front, left corner. Clean all traces of the old gasket from the block but DON%26quot;T MAKE scratches in the aluminium surface!



    14. Check the height of the 4 piston sleeves. They should be a certain height above the block surface. Check with Peugeot for your TU ? engine.

    15 . Fit the new gasket, dry. No silicones.

    16. Place the new, reconditioned head on straight downwards.

    17. Installation is the reverse of removal, BUT...tighten the head bolts in the sequence 1,2,3......10. To a torque of 20? Nm = 15 ft.lbs...then second passing, a further 240 degrees. Check the exact specs for your engine.

    18. Put the 10mm bolt back into the camshaft gear, now start the timing belt replacement. A new belt is advised, new water pump too if you can afford it.



    19. Get the right tension on your timing belt. 90 degree twist by thumb and forefinger is OK.

    20. Put all those darn wires and hoses back on. Oil dipstick too. fill with coolant and check oil. Valve cover back on of course.

    REMOVE THE 6mm bolt from the flywheel.

    21. Start her up, release air from cooling system. Inspect for water leaks, noises..

    Check the distributor (make sure the points are making contact) and timing.
    maybe u have the wires reversed on the coil

    Did that job on my 89 2.8 Celebrity. Make sure the secondary wires going to the Coil are connected. seems like it was blue clip. You should be able to detect voltage at those leads. If not trace it back to where you do have voltage.If you have voltage there but nothing out of the distributor then I would bet that the wire from the transducer in the distributor that connects to the horse shoe shaped circuit board on the shaft has busted( under the rotor) usually not repairable. i don't know how many GM's around that year I have had this problem with a least four that I have owned. the easiest thing to do is replace the distributor from the junk yard.



    The other option is that you really do have have spark just didn't replace the distribute to the correct position.



    voltage into the secondary wires on the coil will generate spark when the transducer in the distributor says let the spark go. one set of wires is voltage in and the other is to the transducer.

    Hence transducer broken wire no spark.......
    Check For Power At The Distributor Module....Loose Wire...Disconnected Wire(s)..It is Something You Did At Tear Down Or Hookup....Longshot....Module Failed....Auto Zone can test your module

    Are you sure its a headgasket concern, is it possibly something else. Is the truck going through alot of coolant, is there alot of pressure in the radiator or the overflow bottle. Get it checked out before you assume the worst.
    The absolute worst?

    You could lose power suddenly, lose the power assist in your steering and brakes and run off of a cliff, killing yourself and the poor child playing on the beach where you land.
    Blown head gaskets are never good. If you get coolant in your cylinder as it is in the compresion stroke you can do anything from bend a rod to crack and shatter your head its self. There is realy not much to doing a head. Go to AutoZone and get a Haynes manuel and head gasket KIT. The book is about 20 bucks and the KIT is about 50. You could do it by your self one afternoon in about three hours, less if you have worked on engins before. I wouldnt drive it much untill you fix it. Good luck.
    if you changed the gaskets that there wasnt any damage done to the head or motor. First make sure you drain all the oil because it might have water. Then put in new oil and run it. for about a minute. Turn it off and let sit for about 15-20 minutes, then check the oil again to make sure theres no water in it. If theres no water in it, you can drive like that and it will be fine. You'll just burn out the water thats sitting but there not water getting into your oil. This is how my situation went down. Theres no smoke anymore.
    well with a blown gasket you run the risk of destroying the engine and having to 2 pay a couple grand 4 an other engine.
    You're burning coolant (the white smoke). You could have a bad intake manifold gasket. At the worst, you have a cracked head.



    Both of these repairs will run you close to a grand to fix. You have the Vortec, I'm assuming the 5.7liter...so it's a great engine. I wouldn't even hesitate to fix it and keep driving.

The reason is your engine will have better compression and power with the new gaskets and hopefully head job. This will place additional stress on the other engine components, the leaky gasket may have introduced coolant or other materials into the combustion chambers which washed and negatively affected or shortened the life of the piston rings. So its not necessary,its just added insurance against having to go back in there again in the near future. If time and finances are a big issue you are right to forego the ring job, just be aware of the consequence. good luck..

    THey guy you have talked from probably knows a lot about OLDER cars. Most modern engines wear very little, and the rings do NOT require changing. You have not mentioned the year, make, model, or country of origin. When I replace a head gasket, this is what I do. I use Amsoil Foaming Cleaner to wash down the sludge on the rings. Let it soak in an hour or two. With the head removed, it is easy to turn the engine over. Then, I wash the rings with Gum-out spray and pressurized air. Sometimes with brake cleaner. I also use a scotch brite pad to remove the carbon from the motor block and bores. This creates a light %26quot;honing%26quot;. It gives the rings a better surface to wear into. When the head is returned service, expect some smoke out the tail pipe for several minutes, as the cleaners are washed out by oil and the rings re-seal. My method makes engines last another 100,000 miles. Once again, it all depends upon which company made the engine in the first place.

For your information, the lower intake gaskets on these particular engines are pretty common to fail, and produce similar symptoms to a head gasket failure. The 4.2L V6 is from the same engine family as the 3.8L V6 engine that you find under the hoods of many Windstars. The intake gaskets on this particular vehicle is made from plastic, which typically fall apart at the coolant passages, allowing coolant to mix engine oil. If this is your problem, I would go as far as pulling off the lower intake manifold first, and examine the intake gaskets to check for the damage that I've described. The replacement gaskets from Ford are thicker. With that said, care must be taken NOT to strip all the 8mm bolts which secure the lower intake to the heads, due to all the bolt holes not lining up without persuasion. Hope this helps.     In a garage you would be looking at around the 拢500 mark because they will probably insist on a new timing belt kit, maybe more if they insist on changing the bearing ladder, which is sometimes included as part of the kit, and to facilitate this, the sump has to be removed.

    If the engine is similar to a car engine then I think you will have to dismantle and re-fit. This needs to be done in a very methodical manner as any difference in timing belt/chain can cause severe problems. Likewise you will have to readjust tappets etc to ensure that clearances are correct.

    Remove the left crankcase cover and try to turn the flywheel - forward %26amp; backward (remove the spark plug to make it easier).

    If the flywheel turns freely, the top end is not the problem.

    Perhaps something with the exhaust valve is causing problems - remove the exhaust pipe and look.

    If your car has that kind of mileage I would recommend doing a complete rebuild. If you restore the upper end compression it may cause blow by of oil past the rings. Why tear it down twice when you can do the job once and be finished. The car would run if you only did the gasket job, just not well or for very long. It would be false economy to go cheap by only doing the gasket.

    ever have of the cast iron, and for a hugely

    inflated price over the actual cost.



    Most likely you will probably need a new

    head as yours has probably developed the

    fine, hairline cracks that will open up more with

    driving. They cannot be seen, and therefore must

    be checked by a good machine shop. There is

    no real good way to fix these cracks in most

    cases. The machine shop will tell you, though.



    The actual task of changing the gasket/head is

    not bad. Only your familiarization with that task,

    and of the car will determine if it takes you one,

    or two days, or three to five days. A real good

    mechanic that is very familiar with your particular

    car, has all the proper tools, and a spare head

    (if one is required), can start in the morning, and

    have it back on the road that same day. If a

    spare head is not available, and the ability to

    check the head properly is not available it must

    go to a machine shop. That can take an additional

    one or two days to complete the job. If the old head

    is just put back on the car without the machine

    shop testing, most likely the job will have to be

    done all over again real soon. The problem with

    hurrying is that more damage is done to the

    engine so that a complete rebuild, or replacement

    of the engine becomes necessary. That takes

    even more time. The cost in time, and money is

    very high. You could probably replace the car

    for less.



    A new head for the car can cost anywhere from

    $300 to $700. A reconditioning of yours at a

    machine shop could cost from $60 to $175. The

    cost of a 'so called' factory reconditioned head

    will be the same as a new one.



    In doing the job you will need to take the time

    to remove a lot of wires/harnesses, vacuum lines,

    and water lines. Take care to insure just where

    each goes. Then begin 'dusting your knuckles'

    to take the head off the engine. You will need a

    pretty fair set of good metric tools of both the

    wrenches, and a socket set.



    Take care in reinstalling everything. Be sure to

    follow the torque settings for all the bolts/nuts.

    Having a book on your car that gives you all the

    particular specs, the tear down procedure, and

    the wiring diagrams is a big help. You can get

    a cheap book from most any auto parts store.

    I always have books on every car I work on.

    (and that happens to be four file cabinets of

    four drawers each, and a large bookcase full.)

    The best books you can get are terribly costly.

    Those are the factory service manuals, and the

    Mitchell Automotive series manuals. For the

    information in these books your best bet is to

    just go to your public library. You can't check

    them out, but you can copy them there. You

    can get two book pages on one 11 X 17 sheet

    for a cost of ten cents each sheet. Most times

    you can get all you need, much better copies,

    and better diagrams than are printed in the

    cheap books. The cost for these copies to

    cover most everything you need will be from

    $1.00 to about $10, depending upon just

    how much of a 'book' you want.



    In any event, just be prepared for the possibility

    that you will need to replace the head. Check

    for one from a salvage yard, but plan to have it

    tested before installing it. Most yards will allow

    to exchange it if it is also bad, but it can cost

    you more time in completing the job. The time

    spent at this point might be more than you

    wish, but the cost savings over having to do it

    all over again is great.

    hi, i am baffled with this car. am not a full mechanic but am very capable. i helped my mate change the head gasket and most if not all other gaskets too, cleaned spark plugs, changed oil pump, water pump, under drive pulley with all new belts including timing belt+pullies apart from the tensioner, recently changed front suspension to KYB-GR2 and back getting done next weekend. the coolant is leaking out from below maybe a crack or seal but have not fixed that yet..also the thermostat is still out coz there's still some gundge from b4 in the system but will get installed when fully cleaned the radiator..

    2nd, you and your friend changed the head gasket together? Do you smell gas when driving? Ya'll probably did a good job on the head gasket but forgot to re-seat the fuel rail properly. It sounds like that is going to be your solution. Also check your fuel lines and fuel pressure regulator for leaks.



    3rd, Your coolant leak sounds more like a freeze plug leaking than a cracked block/head or gasket.

    Hello everyone, I am going to be changing the head gaskets in my 98 Ford Crown Victoria 4.6L V-8. Besides all the tools I'll need and of course the head gasket, what parts and supplies will I need to get the job done without having to leave the house to grab a forgotten part. Also what should I take advantage of while I have the engine apart as in like replacing other parts or beefing up anything or any other type of preventative maintenance. One more question: am I gonna have to remove all the pulleys / timing cover area towards the front of the engine to get the heads out or could all that be left in?What do I need to change a head gasket?While I am unfamiliar with the particular car you will have to remove the timing belt. Once you have the heads off, you will need to have them resurfaced by a machinist. Otherwise, odds are the gasket will not hold up. You will also need intake and exhaust gaskets.

    While you are in there, if you remove the oil pan you can ridge ream the cylinders and remove the pistons to replace the rings. Then usually new rod bearings at the bottom. The cylinders must be honed so the new rings will seat. This is what you could do, but it is a lot more work and should only be done if your engine is running poorly and burning oil. Even then, it will be necessary to meansure cylinder wear to see whether new rings will help.

    Just do the gaskets. And scrape any carbon off the tops of the pistons.

    When you replace your head gaskets, the compression in your motor will dramatically increase...which will probably blow out your piston rings and/or crankshaft bearings, main seals, etc, etc. ...... Plus your entire cooling system is probably full of a greasy sludge.



    Once you need new head gaskets, there are probably many other weak links which also need to be looked over.

    You cannot just change a gasket on a cylinder head. I assume that there is a reason , such as a misfire ? Having removed the head it would make sense to have it (a) Crack tested (b) skimmed. You may have to fit new valves. Re-fitting the head involves the use of a torque wrench and an angle gauge. These are basic and essential items if the job is going to be done correctly. You at best need a qualified person ( with good tools ) to help you.

    i dont think you need a thicker one. just the one that fits the car. white smoke is usual for a car that is cold. and a little water is not a problem. is there loss of power when driving? is there steam or smoke coming out of the engine block? is the coolant a brownish oily color or texture? check all these things, if so you may need to to change your head gasket. i dont think warming the engine up will crack the head. let it warm up take it for a short test drive see if there is any loss of power or steam coming from the engine and check the coolant reservoir for an oil mixture. take it to a mechanic and get a diagnosis and WRITTEN quote for the repairs.

    Take what Garret said, and add to that, the resurfacing of the heads; which is always recommended as well as getting the head checked for cracks before the reinstall. This work is done at a machine shop only. Not all head bolts must be changed, only if they are damaged or the stretch type.

    Head gaskets for a V8 cost like $80 for both, then like $40 for head bolts, then about 20 hours of work at $50/hr adds up. Im an automotive student and if i had an engine hoist, I could change a head gasket on my own. Its pretty simple if you know what tools you need.

    It is much more difficult and time consuming than it used to be. In older vehicles you open the hood and there the engine is. Today, especially mini vans, it takes three hours just to remove enough plumbing to expose the engine. Of course after the gasket has been replaced all the pipes, hoses and wires need to be re installed. This is almost a days labour more than it used to be.

    THEN you need to goto Ford Dealership again....and ask for the torque specs from THEIR shop books.....if they tell you they cant give you them, DEMAND THEM, because they legally are required to do so...especially on the 3.8L engines which had TONS and TONS of HeadGasket problems!!!!

    (my dad literally almost got in a fist fight with a mechanic because he wouldnt give us the Specs.....eventually he talked to a manager and he opologized and made us a copy from the dealership books.)





    Because what happened was most 1994 and up 3.8L v6 engines had some MAJOR issues....



    Around 60-90k....



    -headgaskets would tear(no inner steel linning, crappy materials)

    -headbolts would stretch

    -torque specs were TOO LOW

    -the 3.8Lv6 had an unusual slant angle and design

    -Iron Engine Blocks and Aluminum Cylinder Heads



    Put ALL those together....and it DOESN'T equal a good recipe.





    What you NEED to do is IGNORE Chiltons Manuals or Haynes Manuals and possibly even the Ford CD's you get from Ebay....cause nearly ALL of them have INCORRECT torque specs for the Intake Manifolds and Cylinder Heads!



    You need the FORD DEALERSHIP shop manuals!

    your best bet would be to find a corolla forum....or a toyota forum....just do a basic search for one of those....other than that....its a tough job....youre going to end up removing the header and intake manifolds...probably the power steering pump...a mess of wires....and then the head...dont forget new head bolts...just make sure it needs to be done before you get elbow deep in it.

    In short, unless you are willing to spend 200 dollars for tools and another 50 to 100 dollars in parts - let a trained mechanic do the job.

    Also if this is the first one you have done, plan on doing it twice. You may get it done right the first time, but not if you mix drinking with the job.

    Haynes Auto Manual and tools each type of car wil be about the same nuts and blots wil change but the steps are about the same so depending on what type of car you have heres a few steps.. get a book will walk you thru it all no guessing
    Some cars it is easy, some its takes more time af a lot of connections and cables. Normally you will need special spanner, because to screw you need big power (60-100Nm). Some people mill off the head to be straight. But why do you want to change? Some times just change gasket is not fixing a problem.

    You would need a good set of sockets, a tork wrench, and a good book that gives you the tork specs for your motor as well as R%26amp;R instructions. If a head gasket blew then there is an underlying problem. it would be best to do both heads (if its a V8) and have them milled for flatness before reinstalling them. If you do only one side and even if you don't have it milled if the gaskets is of a different crush thickness then you motor would be off balance as one side would have a greater compression ratio than the other.

There is the chance that your cyl. head may be cracked. Magnaflux the heads and get the valves checked too. My supercharged Pontiac GTP needed 1 head each time I removed them. You should probably get a haynes or clymer manual (available at autozone, etc.) - you won't regret it.



    Make sure you have a torque wrench - if you buy a new one, make absolutely sure to break it in properly.



    Get a head gasket, new head bolts, valve cover gasket, timing belt, and I would suggest getting a water pump as long as you are in there. Grab some black RTV gasket sealant while you are at it (for the valve cover, not the head gasket).



    Start by removing all of the external junk that might get in your way. Some people are tempted to try to only remove what they absolutely have to in order to get to the head, but in my experience it is worth the few extra minutes to get everything out of the way so I'm not having to fight it.



    All of the accessory stuff (alternator/power steering pump) comes off pretty easily - I generally don't disconnect the A/C compressor - just unbolt it and use some big zip strips to mount it out of the way.



    I almost always modify the timing belt cover on escorts by carefully breaking the bottom part of it off - otherwise it is a pain in the azz to get it off and back on. There isn't enough clearance to take it off properly without removing the front motor mount and jacking the engine up.



    Remove the valve cover %26amp; gasket.



    Remove the timing belt - but first make absolutely sure to mark the location of the gears - I generally set it at 'TDC' (top dead center) , and a lot of timing belts will have a 'TDC' mark on them as well. If you get it out of time, you will be cussing when you have to tear it apart again to time it - although modifying the timing belt cover like I mentioned before makes it much easier.



    Get a big breaker bar and pop the head bolts loose. Keep in mind that they are one-time use only. We'll get to that in a minute.



    Carefully pry the head off the engine, and you are halfway there!



    Now, once you have it off, inspect the valves - if the head gasket blew (almost always between pistons where it is really thin) then you should see nice shiny steam cleaned parts.



    Sometimes the head will warp when the gasket blows (especially when it is extremely cold out. The last one I did, I wasted time (and money) putting it completely back together only to find out I had no compression on the middle two cylinders).



    Call around some machine shops, and get a quote for levelling the head. I found a place that only charged me $30, and it was well worth it - the few mils they shaved off actually made a noticeable difference in performance.



    Okay.



    Make sure to get all of the old gasket off the engine and head (if you have the head machined, it will be nice and clean). Put the new head gasket on (I sometimes use a little tiny bit of RTV to hold it in place while I am assembling it) - it helps to have two people so you can carefully lower the head into place. Some people use dowels to align it, but I generally just put it on, and slip a few of the new head bolts in.



    Now - this is where you either need to check online or in the book, because you are going to torque the head bolts down - but there is an order to tighten them down in (you will follow the pattern several times rather than just cranking each one down all the way the first time). Then (and this is why you can't reuse the head bolts - regardless of what some people will tell you) you are going to over-torque the bolts to the final setting (again, refer to the book, or online), and they will actually twist a little bit. This is to make up for the difference in rate of expansion between the aluminum head, and the cast block.



    Now it's back to the timing belt - usually if you are doing the belt (and the head) it's time for a water pump, but that's up to you.



    Make sure you have both gears properly aligned (TDC is the best bet) and put the new belt on.



    Everything else is just reassembly from that point on.

    if it is the early escort they was prone to cracked heads.in the book

    it will tell you step by step and have pitchers to.most of the time the

    crack was around 2 and 3 put a brush on a drill and clean it up then inspect it well.Be sure to get a strait edge and check end to end +side

    to side that it has no warp-edge. if it is cracked it is junk you will need a different one.If warped call a machine shop and see what it will cost

    to have it machined.As he said replace the head bolts and the timing

    belt as you have it off and spend the money about $20 for the belt.
