Head gasket? If your engine is knocking you have bigger problems than just a head gasketYou need to pull the radiator cap and put a new car under it...lolJust kiddin', sorry...I dont know anything about head gaskets. The way to determine if your head gasket is blown is to remove the hight tension lead from the centre of the distributor and run the starter. If the sound is regular as you crank, the head gasket is fine. If it changes beat, it's blown. ie. the sound changes speed each 2nd revolution of the motor.
If it's blown, get it replaced. If you can't afford it, try a bottle of Cargo seal-up. Often works real well. Read the info on it in the link.It is not an easy job. Unless you have the proper tools and the proper environment to take on such a task, you would be better served by having a professional do the work. If you decide to attempt to do the job for yourself be sure to research the bolting patterns to undertake while re-bolting the head. It is essential to apply the proper torque of the bolts in the proper order to achieve a solid seal. Good Luckman bad news if you blew the head gaskets on this car. you are probably going to have to have new heads. you best bet on this one is trying to find a engine from a junk yard or buying a rebuild engine to put in. these heads crack very easly. and if your car is knocking you probably have bad bearings in the lower part of the engine. have a great daycould also be intake gaskets leaking, which is very coomon on 3.1/3.4If you blew a head gasket, you will have white smoke that smells sweet coming from the exhaust and water in the oil. The knocking sound could be a couple of things, but not a head gasket. Try getting a tune up and check your spark plugs for fouled plugs.
