86 camaro i roc z28 v8 305, just changed head gaskets and now it overheats?

well i just finished changing head gaskets and resurfacing the heads on my camaro and now when I start it and test drive it it gets way hot, mostly by the exhaust manifolds and well most of the engine, also there seems to be a lot of exhaust smoke leaking out of the exhaust pipe under car.... what could be wrong?86 camaro i roc z28 v8 305, just changed head gaskets and now it overheats?Did you change the thermostat? If the inlet side of the radiator is cool the thermostat may be stuck closed. Or you could have an air pocket.

your heat riser valve is stuck close, and that back pressure or exhaust is staying in the engine, and this is causing the overheating problem

Make sure the block filled with coolant. If you just filled the rad the air in the engine block gets trapped under the thermostat, which will not open even though you are cooking the block.

It means you are running with a dry block.

Not good.
Is the water overheating, or does it just seem hot under the hood? Check your water level. If it is going down, you likely don't have a good seal btwn the head, gasket, and block. If the water is not circulating, or is hot but not going down in level, you may have the wrong gaskets, and they are blocking the water passages. Sometimes gaskets change within year models.

Exhaust leaks? You obviously don't have a good seal between the head and the manifold, or the manifold and the head pipe, if you disconnected it there.

Did you do the reassembly using a torque wrench, torquing each bolt to factory specs? If not, that could be your whole problem.
it is always possible you have the head gaskets on the wrong side, some 305 and 350 engine have a right and a left head gasket, also need to be sure the cooling system is full of coolant (no air bubbles in the system), if you put in a new thermostat, possible that it is not working properly, saw a lot of bad new thermostats here lately
