Is it hard to change a head gasket ? What would i need to do?

if you need to ask you should take it to a mechanic. Is it hard to change a head gasket ? What would i need to do? go to a auto store and buy a Haynes Auto Manual for your particular car and follow the instructions.

If the store does not have the book then go online to Haynes. You can order a book online.

Yes it is difficult.

You need a complete set of tools and a manual specific to at least the engine if not the complete car.

The auto-zone site may have a manual for your car on line.

Keep in mind that if the head is warped the least amount the head will need to be milled. If you don't all the parts and labor is wasted.

Get a digital camera to take pictures as you take it apart. Other wise you may not remember how it goes back together.

In short, unless you are willing to spend 200 dollars for tools and another 50 to 100 dollars in parts - let a trained mechanic do the job.

Also if this is the first one you have done, plan on doing it twice. You may get it done right the first time, but not if you mix drinking with the job.

Haynes Auto Manual and tools each type of car wil be about the same nuts and blots wil change but the steps are about the same so depending on what type of car you have heres a few steps.. get a book will walk you thru it all no guessing
Some cars it is easy, some its takes more time af a lot of connections and cables. Normally you will need special spanner, because to screw you need big power (60-100Nm). Some people mill off the head to be straight. But why do you want to change? Some times just change gasket is not fixing a problem.
HI

You would need a good set of sockets, a tork wrench, and a good book that gives you the tork specs for your motor as well as R%26amp;R instructions. If a head gasket blew then there is an underlying problem. it would be best to do both heads (if its a V8) and have them milled for flatness before reinstalling them. If you do only one side and even if you don't have it milled if the gaskets is of a different crush thickness then you motor would be off balance as one side would have a greater compression ratio than the other.

good luck

Tim
