1985 jetta - no power after head gasket change?

Well, after I've changed the head gasket, and put engine back together, it starts, but has no power. It sounds similar like when one cylinder is not firing (checked - all cylinders work). Sparkplugs are wet from fuel. There is also strong gasoline smell in the engine compartment. I've didn't changed the timing belt, during the head removal I had timing belt carefuly maintaned tensed (bungee cord tied to the hood) , and had it returned to the previously marked position on camshaft sprocket. All pipes / wires are returned back into their positions.

Any ideas what I might done wrong / should check ?

Thanks !1985 jetta - no power after head gasket change?it sounds like your head is warped you can try to get it plained but If i were you I would just go and get a rebuilt one its money well spent

poss a tooth or two off on timing should look at marks
Sure sounds to me like the cam is out of time. Maybe you have the timing belt on just a hair off. It sounds like its close enough to run, but not dead on. If its off just a little, it may run but poorly. And here's a hint: when you take off the timing belt to reposition it, do yourself a favor and replace it. Its money well spent.
youre head is warped, and damaged valves

have head rebuilt or buy anirther one
could be a warped or cracked head
