When changing a head gasket in a car do you need to drain the oil? Thank you.?

If you have water in the oil, yes. Absolutely. As soon as possible, even if you're not ready to do the head gasket job. Water in your crankcase will cause rust where you don't want it. Also, you do have to drain the cooling system. Do that before you loosen the head bolts, to keep moisture out of your oil.

If the oil is still clean, I would wait until after installing the new head gasket. That way, you can change the oil and remove any debris you put into the engine while doing the head gasket job. When changing a head gasket in a car do you need to drain the oil? Thank you.?you really should so no oil will be in the engine that could touch the top of the block and mess up the new head gasket.

It's not necessary, but it's a good time to change the oil.

Good luck!

not at first you don,t but you do after you get the gasket changed.
I'm doing the same job. I didn't drain the oil but in retrospect I wish I had. it would have been a much cleaner job. Definitely drain the coolant before you get into the intake manifold. And if I could do it again I would have left the intake stuff in tact and taken it all off together. I am just to the point where the head is off. Have fun and remember to torque correctly and you cant go wrong.
If you have a leaking head gasket it's time to delve in now before you ruin your engine, water is now probably mixing with your oil and thats a disaster waiting to happen, and yes you definately have to change your oil and filter after your done putting on a new head gasket, don't forget to get the head checked for being straight when you have it off.
