Going back with a stock replacement is best unless there is suspected warpage or damage.I have a 1990 chevy cavalier i had to change head gasket? If you're changing the head gasket it's always a good idea to have a machine shop check the head for warppage. A thicker gasket wouldn't help, get the one that goes for the vehicle.I have a 1990 chevy cavalier i had to change head gasket?i dont think you need a thicker one. just the one that fits the car. white smoke is usual for a car that is cold. and a little water is not a problem. is there loss of power when driving? is there steam or smoke coming out of the engine block? is the coolant a brownish oily color or texture? check all these things, if so you may need to to change your head gasket. i dont think warming the engine up will crack the head. let it warm up take it for a short test drive see if there is any loss of power or steam coming from the engine and check the coolant reservoir for an oil mixture. take it to a mechanic and get a diagnosis and WRITTEN quote for the repairs.
