How do you change a head gasket in a 120hp mercruiser?

i just bought a 1974 Mark Twain with a 120hp MerCruiser and i found water in the oil. I know that means one of two things but do you think i should change the gasket or junk the motor. How do you change a head gasket in a 120hp mercruiser?first off it it still runs don't junk the engine. this is normally a 4 cylinder engine...GM or Volvo. I'd pull the head off and check the head for cracks. If the head is ok then just clean the surfaces...you may want to have the head planed...then replace the gasket and off you go. In most cases there is no need to remove the engine to effect this repair...it's much like changing the head gasket on a car.

Hope this helps

first I'd have it professional honed. Then decide on cost or sale

most likely the head gasket, remove the head and make sure the water hasn't damaged the cylinder walls if not clean the gasket surface on the head and block, replace the gasket and torque to specifications
